Winner of the Best Director Academy Award (1958), Vincente Minnelli is known as an auteur who brought musicals to a new level and elicited exquisite performances from stars such as Judy Garland – whom he was famously married to – Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra, Fred Astaire and Kirk Douglas.
Perhaps the greatest director of musicals in Hollywood's history, Minnelli (1910-1986) started out as a Midwest costume and set designer. After a spell in New York in the 1930s, he moved to Hollywood, where, working with producer Arthur Freed at MGM, he directed over two decades a series of landmarks in American cinema. Mixing fantasy and everyday life, his films were laden with flamboyant colour and decor, swooping crane shots and swirling patterns of light.
To celebrate his legacy, the Barbican Arts Centre on the South Bank of London is holding a superb retrospective season this September/October, featuring screenings of 'Meet Me in St Louis', 'Gigi', 'The Pirate', 'An American in Paris', 'Some Came Running' and 'The Band Wagon'.
