Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World.

STORY RATING

100%

Scott Pilgrim is an adaptation of an already cult comic strip of which there are six issues, which tells the story of a 23 year old Toronto slacker who plays in a band called ‘Sex Bob-Omb’ and acts like a bit of a typical twenty-something. Pilgrim appears to be somewhat useless with women, although amazingly he’s got no problem getting them. Indeed, in the movie Pilgrim (played by Michael Cera) has never had a problem getting a girlfriend at all.

It's getting rid of them that proves difficult apparently. From the girl who kicked his heart to pieces, and who is now is back in town, to the teenage distraction he's trying to shake when Ramona (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) rollerblades into his world, love hasn't been easy. He soon discovers, however, his new crush has the most unusual baggage of all. A nefarious league of exes controls her love life and will do whatever it takes to eliminate him as a suitor. As Scott gets closer to Ramona, he must face an increasingly vicious rogues' gallery from her past; from infamous skateboarders to vegan rock stars and fearsomely identical twins. And if he hopes to win his true love, he must vanquish them all before it really is game over.

The thing that makes the prospect exciting is that it’s been directed by the hugely talented English filmmaker, Edgar Wright, who rose to prominence through his collaborations with Simon Pegg on the cult Channel 4 series ‘Spaced’, and its brilliant spin-off movie, ‘Sean of the Dead’ – easily the funniest and scariest comedy-horror since ‘An American Werewolf in London’ – followed by the not quite so good, but still very good indeed, ‘Hot Fuzz.’

On the surface, the prospect of a young adult slacker comic strip movie adaptation starring Michael Cera might get many yawning, make others feel vaguely nauseous and still more completely baffled. But thanks to Wright’s excellent visual flair and infamous perfectionism (‘Scott Pilgrim’ has been pushed back and back due to reshoots and reediting) this movie might yet rise above its component parts to become one of the films of the year as some on-line preview reviews are already suggesting.

‘Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World’ goes on general release in the UK on 25th August. Give it a chance. Edgar Wright’s visual wit usually goes a long way.
